Artist Statement/Resume/Bio

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a fiber art adventurer, experimenting with flexibility and dimension while exploring tactility, whimsy, and ultimately our intimacy and connection with textiles. I began sewing at my mother’s knee and was taught by example the love of fabric. Although my sewing and quilting roots are obvious, I quickly moved through traditional quilting and on to fiber art, or textiles that removed themselves and their functionality from the bed and struck out with certainty to join art on the wall.

I am inspired by the world I inhabit and my often-quirky perception of what some might consider mundane. But I carry on capturing and interpreting the beauty or whimsy I find along my daily journey. I find comfort in creation, but there is also an exciting kind of alchemy in moving a flat medium into the third dimension, in transforming a woven surface with color and stitch, or in adding the textural elements of loose threads and raw and raveling edges.

Cloth is personal, intimate. It covers all of us day and night. And maybe because of that history of comfort and warmth against our skin, textile art is the perfect medium to invite, perhaps even compel, a viewer’s touch. And that, too, is part of the medium’s magic. If I could be granted one art wish, it would be that everyone who sees my work be allowed to touch it, for I think that intimacy would surely connect us. We as humans are born to touch—the world around us and each other.

My studio is in my home where I have a dedicated space to plan, paint, and stitch. My very basic older sewing machines, my inks, threads, eyes, and hands—these are my tools as I take fabric and transform it.

BIO

Rosanna Lynne Welter has roots in traditional quilting but quickly transitioned to textile art once she began exploring the exciting processes and techniques advancing the fiber arts movement. Just as she was emerging in the field, “life” put art on extended pause as she cared for elderly parents and earned a living. Eventually the long drought ended, the floodgates opened, and her art began flowing again, moving her down exciting new paths. As a self-taught artist, her work is filled with naivety, dimension, whimsy, texture, and lots of thread.

Rosanna has competed and been juried into exhibits locally (Brigham City Museum of Art, Springville Museum of Art, Salt Lake Community College, Bountiful Davis Art Center), regionally (Front Porch Gallery, Carlsbad, CA; Studio Door Gallery, San Diego, CA; Art Ark Gallery, San Jose, CA; Dona Ana Arts Council, Los Cruces, NM), and nationally/internationally (Sonoran Desert Museum, Tucson, AZ; Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Art Museum, La Conner, WA; Detroit Zoo; SOFA [now Intersect Chicago], Navy Pier, Chicago in 2021 and 2022; Vision Gallery, Chandler, AZ; Long Beach Quilt Festival, Long Beach, CA; Oklahoma State University Museum of Art, Stillwater, OK; The Virginia Quilt Museum, Harrisonburg, VA; The Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA).

Rosanna’s work is in private collections and has been published in multiple books and catalogs. Her early works were exhibited at Quilt National, International Quilt Expo in Innsbruck Austria, and the Musée des Tissue in Lyon France. She is also a past recipient of a Utah Arts Council/NEA Individual Artist Grant and in 2026 received a Utah Arts & Museums Career Advancement Grant.

Currently, Rosanna is a member of 4 Common Corners, an invitational fiber arts group composed of artists living in Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico (4commoncorners.com), and Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA.com) where she is a Juried Artist and where she served on the CO/UT/ WY Regional Exhibition Committee. Locally, she has served as Exhibitions Chair, as well as Treasurer, for the Utah Surface Design Group.

Rosanna, an Idaho native who has lived most of her life in Utah, is currently focusing on her daily art practice at her in-home studio in West Valley City, Utah where she lives with her husband, a rescue doggie, and a rescue kitty.
