As a fiber artist, I have always considered myself an art opportunist, finding invitations to make art everywhere in my life. I am just as likely to be captured by the shape and pattern of cracks in asphalt as I am by the glory of nature. People think you a bit nuts photographing the grocery store parking lot on your hands and knees, and maybe they are right. But I carry on, capturing what I see as beautiful and then translating it to fabric. I find it nearly impossible to describe how the randomness of this opportunistic approach brings me such satisfaction. It is thrilling to work in a medium with such varied opportunities for expression, including a new approach to fabric I have taken up in recent years–using pencil, paint brushes, acrylics, and inks as a new focus in my work since 2019. And at the end of everything, my quilting stitches and designs bring a texture to my work that adds richness and depth. Leaving edges raw, letting seams ravel, or choosing not to clip strings are themes throughout my body of work. If I could have an “art” wish, it would be that everyone who sees my work could touch it, for that would surely connect us.
My work is in private collections and has been shown in national and international juried fiber shows, including Quilt National; and photos have been published in multiple books. I was thrilled to be the recipient of a Utah Arts Council/National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Grant, and I am profoundly encouraged to produce work in the fiber arts. I whole-heartedly endorse the idea that “public art is not only important but vital to a community and to the world. It educates, persuades, makes aware, and inspires,” and it does this through a diversity of people, ideas, and mediums–including fiber art.
I am a member of 4 Common Corners, an invitational group of quilt artists working in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah (4commoncorners.com). I am also a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA.com), where I have served on the Colorado/Utah/Wyoming Regional Exhibition Committee. Locally, I am a member of the Utah Surface Design Group, where I have served recently as Exhibitions Chair.
